Brothers & Sisters returned to television this week with
four more episodes for this season and I found it a bit jarring that the Rob Lowe character
(Senator McCallister) lost the presidential nomination and we quickly
fast-forwarded three months. I guess it makes sense because of the writer’s
strike that the show should fast-forward at least three months, but I felt like
I missed something. As if I had been on safari for several months and just
returned home to reconnect with family and friends.
It may feel as if there’s a lot of catching up to do, but I
was happy they picked up where they left off with the suggestion that perhaps
Rebecca’s father may not be the famous Walker dad. That perhaps David Caplan,
played by Ken Olin,
who had an affair with her mother Holly Harper, played by real-wife Patricia Wettig,
might be her true biological father.
At last Holly admitted it was a real possibility. It’ll be
interesting to see how the DNA test, conducted by nabbing David’s hair on a
hairbrush, turns out. Rebecca’s “half-brother” Justin seems to be pushing this
test – perhaps he’s hoping for romantic reasons of his own that Rebecca isn’t
his half-sister.
Are you following this? This is only one storyline of a
complex soap opera. But the writing is brilliant and the actors are seasoned
professionals. With Sally
Field at the helm of the dysfunctional Walker clan, being romanced by Danny
Glover, with the likes of Rob Lowe playing off my favorite character, Calista Flockhart,
what would you expect?
Look for fireworks next week when self-sacrificing Saul,
played by Ron Rifkin,
asserts his own needs ahead of the family for the first time, and gets into hot
water.
It’s a wonderful ensemble cast with excellent writing, and I’m
happy to see it return to night time television - not only for the remainder of this season but for next season, as well.
