10 Unknown Movies You Must See

A friend of mine read my article Leaving the Movie Mainstream and asked me if there were any more movies I could recommend. I have since decided to comprise a list of 10 movies that I think every movie lover should experience. The list is by no means complete and one could spend a lifetime watching and searching for quality movies. Nevertheless, here is my list of personal favorites that are unknown to many. What’s on your must see list?

1. Office Space: Mike Judge, the creator of King of the Hill and Beavis and Butthead, makes pure magic with this workplace parody about a group of disgruntled employees who consider stealing from their employer. A must see for anyone working in a cubicle. (Ron Livingston, Jennifer Aniston)

2. Hackers: The movie that shaped our modern day stereotype of a computer hacker. One of those rare classics that influenced a generation. A group of young hackers uncover a plot by a nefarious IT administrator, who plans on stealing from an oil company. (Jonny Lee Miller, Angelina Jolie) 

3. The Boondock Saints: Troy Duffy has proven once and for all that you don’t need an ingenious idea to create a fantastic film. Two Irish brothers go on a killing rampage after they accidently involve themselves in the Boston underworld. (Willem Dafoe, Sean Patrick Flanery) 

4. School Ties: A Jew from a poor family is given a scholarship at a prestigious private high school. There he encounters anti-Semitism and tires to keep his religion secret. (Brendan Frasier, Matt Damon)

5. The Apartment: If you’ve ever heard your parents say “they don’t make movies like they used to,” odds are they were referring to this older classic. The Apartment is a story about a man who lets his superiors use his apartment to cheat on their wives. (Jack Lemmon, Shirley MacLaine) 

6. Dune: Before the popular video game, came this eighties hit the altered our perception of science fiction. Even for those that aren’t fans of the genre, the fabulous cast and powerful story make Dune a must watch. (Kyle MacLachlan, Patrick Stewart, Sting) 

7. The Crow: Bruce Lee’s son Brandon was killed in this film from a faulty gun shot blank. Brandon was in the entire film however, made possible by computer generated effects that were cutting edge in those days. Plus, it’s a pretty good movie. (Brandon Lee, Rochelle Davis)

8. The Usual Suspects: This is one of those times where I struggle to understand how so many people have not seen this marvelous flick. Great acting and a tantalizing story telling make The Usual Suspects one of the best movies ever made. I could give you a synopsis, but it wouldn’t do the movie justice. Should be in every home video collection. (Stephen Baldwin, Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin Spacey)

9. Wal-Mart High Cost of Low Price: Believe it or not, a documentary has made this list. This movie changed my life and changed my perception of others. It is well constructed and emotional. WARNING: You’ll never enter Wal-Mart again after watching this documentary.

10. Shanghai Kiss:A fun romantic drama about an Asian American who suddenly comes across a large amount of money and must leave a young girl who idolizes him behind. This is the type of movie that needs to be given a chance. Don’t judge it by the first 30 minutes. (Ken Leung, Hayden Panettiere)
