You know you've hit the big time as an entertainer when it's your smiling face on the cover of the Airline freebie magazine, residing right in front of the barf bag, and right behind the safety instructions.
Traveling home from Florida this week, I pulled out the inflight magazine for American Airlines and found Saturday Night Live star Amy Poehler's smiling mug on the cover. How did this Not Ready For Prime Time Player get awarded this coveted position?
She's been doing movies left and right the past two years, with everything from comedies to voiceovers. Poehler appeared alongside her husband Will Arnett in Blades of Glory with fellow Saturday Night Live alum Will Ferrell, as well as in Mr. Woodchuck, and provided the voices of Snow White in Shrek the Third and Sally O'Malley in Horton Hears a Who.
This month finds Poehler in her first starring role, and once again she's finding it within the safety of fellow Saturday Night Live alums. She'll star in Baby Mama alongside Tina Fey who is another that is no stranger to branching out outside of the show that made them household names, appearing in television's 30 Rock the past few years, a show she also created.
Paging through the article in the inflight magazine, it seemed Poehler is the same warm goofball that we see on TV. She openly admits to directors of new projects that she's very loud, and like someone else's car radio, you won't be able to shut her off. In addition, she seems to be joining the ranks of Fey, as she moves behind the camera as well, producing and writing Mighty B for Nickelodeon.
Watching the previews of Baby Mama, it seems Poehler's star is only going to grow, meaning she'll even be too big for the inflight magazine soon. She won't need to warn directors of her loudness. They're already getting that message from her loud and clear.
